Daniel R. Mitchell, a Wisconsin native, is a multi-faceted musician active in composition, performance, and education.  His original works, ranging from large-ensemble pieces to pop songs, have received numerous accolades.

The Dawning of a Soul was selected as the winner of the 6th annual H. Robert Reynolds Composer Competition, and was performed in Carnegie Hall in May of 2005. Another of Mitchell's compositions, entitled Anything But Fall in Love, was state finalist in the 2005 BMI John Lennon Songwriting Contest. In 2006, his song Second in Line was selected as the overall 2nd place winner in that same competition. The Home of the Great Spirit, written for the Lakeshore Wind Ensemble in the spring of 2008, is the latest of his 4commissioned large-ensemble works.

As a pianist, Mitchell keeps a busy performance schedule, regularly playing as a solo artist, accompanist, church musician, or as a member of ensembles of various sizes and genres.  The month of October, 2007 was highlighted by a performance in Aretha Franklin's band.

As an educator, Mitchell has experience teaching private lessons as well as leading master classes and workshops.  He was a faculty member at the Presbyterian Association of Musicians (PAM) annual conference at Westminster College in 2008. There he co-taught classes on jazz and gospel music with well-known composer and organist Keith Hampton

Mitchell holds a degree in Jazz Studies Composition from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, and currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee.
